10 inmates regain freedom in Jigawa

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has granted pardon to 10 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the state.

The NCoS spokesperson, CSC Sani Jahun, announced this in a statement issued on Monday in Dutse.

According to Jahun, the inmates were pardoned following a recommendation from the Advisory Council for Prerogative of Mercy during its first 2025 session.

“In the spirit of Ramadan fasting and Sallah celebrations, Governor Namadi approved the release of 10 inmates from various correctional centers across the state,” Jahun stated.

During the handover of the executive order to the NCoS command, the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Abdulqadir Fanini, advised the freed inmates to embrace good conduct and avoid future criminal activities.

Receiving the order, the Controller of Corrections in Jigawa State, CCS Yusuf Lakpene, expressed appreciation to the governor on behalf of the Controller-General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche.

Lakpene urged the released inmates to uphold the values and reformative skills they acquired while in custody.

Jahun further detailed that:

  • Six inmates were released from Medium Security Correctional Centre (MSCC) Gumel,
  • Two from MSCC Hadejia,
  • Two from Birnin Kudu Farm Center.

Among them:

  • Five were released on probation,
  • One due to illness (chronic liver failure),
  • Four were granted unconditional release.

Additionally, all freed inmates received a stipend for transportation and to celebrate Sallah.
