Asari Dokubo, a former militant leader, has announced his intention to forge an alliance with the North as he looks toward the 2027 presidential election.
Dokubo made this declaration while accusing President Bola Tinubu of betrayal, despite having supported his election as president in 2023.
He recounted how he spent his own funds to campaign for Tinubu during the last election, only to feel deceived afterward.
In a viral video addressing his followers, he reminded them that he had previously urged Nigerians to hold him accountable if Tinubu failed in his presidency.
He stated, “I apologize to our elders for not recognizing the value of an alliance with the North in the past. As younger individuals, we will now pursue that same alliance.
“From this day forward, I will work on forming a partnership with the North. President Tinubu has betrayed me after I emptied my bank account to support his campaign. The Tinubu I know now is not the same as the one I once knew. We need to spread the word that only the Northerners can effectively work with the Ijaw people.
“We cannot align with the Yoruba; they have betrayed us. We put our lives on the line to vote and put in the hard work, and this is our reward?”
This statement coincides with discussions about a potential alliance among opposition political parties in Nigeria.
In January, political scientist Pat Utomi revealed that he had consulted with PDP’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso about forming a new political party.
Utomi recently affirmed that Atiku, Kwankwaso, and Obi have agreed to collaborate in creating a political party aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
