Isaac Onuh, a former Nigerian ambassador to Botswana, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to cease what he describes as a “macabre dance” against Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, in the name of fighting corruption. Onuh expressed these sentiments during a press conference in Lokoja on Friday.
Onuh, who has also served as a lawmaker, cautioned the EFCC against its alleged tactics of harassment aimed at Bello for his decision to run in the 2023 presidential election. He suggested that Bello’s political aspirations may have led adversaries to manipulate the anti-graft agency to tarnish his reputation, which he maintained during his tenure as governor.
“Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello deserves respect from agencies like the EFCC for his eight years of dedicated service to Kogi State,” Onuh asserted. He criticized the EFCC for making baseless allegations of financial misconduct and for erroneously declaring Bello wanted.
He pointed out that the agency has damaged its own credibility by conducting media trials, which he views as an abuse of power. He mentioned that Bello has received recognition from international financial organizations for his prudent management of state resources.
Onuh reiterated that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees the autonomy of its states and that Kogi State has established a State Anti-Corruption Commission, which has consistently cleared Bello and his administration of wrongdoing.
He argued that the EFCC exceeded its legal authority by labeling Bello a wanted individual. Additionally, Onuh recounted an incident where EFCC officials refused to meet with Bello and Governor Ododo, opting instead for a surprise operation at the Kogi State liaison office in Abuja to embarrass them.
He referred to a recent appeal by Chief Olisa Agbakoba, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, for legislative reforms concerning law enforcement and anti-corruption efforts.
Onuh expressed concern that the ongoing targeting of Bello appears intended to unjustly humiliate him. He also highlighted that 19 state governors are challenging the constitutionality of the EFCC in the Supreme Court.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede adheres to the law to uphold Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
