Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello was brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja for arraignment but appeared without legal representation.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought Bello to court to have his plea taken on a new set of charges.
However, a complication arose when Justice Emeka Nwite noted that the defendant was unrepresented by counsel. Bello explained to the court that he had only learned of the arraignment late Thursday night and was unable to contact his lawyers.
While the EFCC, represented by Kemi Pinheiro, pushed for the arraignment to proceed, Justice Nwite declined the request, citing the importance of upholding Bello’s fundamental right to a fair hearing.
The judge stated that he took into account the defendant’s claim of being informed about the arraignment on short notice.
In a brief ruling, Justice Nwite postponed the arraignment to December 13, ordering that Bello remain in EFCC custody until then. The judge also directed that a hearing notice be served on Bello’s legal team to ensure their presence in court.
