Senate summons Aviation Minister, NCAA, airlines over poor flight operations

The Senate on Wednesday summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, and the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, to address concerns over poor flight operations in the country.

Airline operators and other key stakeholders in the aviation industry were also called to appear before the Senate to discuss the persistent issues of delayed and canceled flights.

This decision followed a motion presented by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North) during plenary. The Senate specifically tasked its Committee on Aviation to investigate the causes of these frequent disruptions and propose lasting solutions.

Senator Buhari, in his presentation, highlighted the increasing prevalence of flight delays and cancellations, noting their adverse effects.

“This situation is troubling, as air travel is considered one of the most reliable, efficient, and fastest modes of transportation, often used for business, official engagements, and other time-sensitive commitments,” he stated.

He warned that “these unwarranted delays and cancellations could negatively impact the socio-economic growth and development of the country.”

The senator emphasized the regulatory role of the NCAA, established under the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act, which is designed to ensure airlines adhere to international standards and provide customers with value for their money.

Buhari stressed that the aviation sector’s shortcomings could undermine efforts to diversify the economy and attract foreign investment, which are key priorities for the current administration.

He also pointed out that Part 19 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority Regulations (2023) includes provisions for consumer protection. However, enforcement remains a challenge, as many Nigerians are unaware of their rights to compensation for delays.

“There is an urgent need for the NCAA to enforce this regulation to hold airline operators accountable and ensure they fulfill their obligations,” Buhari concluded.
