Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, has urged the Federal Government to disclose the specifics of the purported allocation of N30 billion to each of the 36 state governors to address inflation and the soaring costs of food items. He emphasized the need for the government to cease the practice of recklessly allocating scarce and borrowed funds to immediate issues and consumption.
Obi’s call comes in response to Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s assertion that an “unconfirmed report” suggested that state governors received N30 billion each from the federation account to mitigate economic hardship and widespread hunger in their respective regions.
However, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State refuted Akpabio’s claim, stating that there was no truth to the assertion that states received an additional N30 billion each outside of their regular revenue allocations.
In a statement on his social media handle on Friday, Obi stressed the importance of transparency and good governance by urging authorities to provide details of the disbursement. He highlighted that such transparency would allow the public, particularly the intended beneficiaries, to ensure the funds are utilized appropriately.
Obi also appealed to state governments to ensure that the resources are invested transparently and effectively in productive endeavors to alleviate current hardships and foster future growth in the country.
