The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealed on Monday that President Bola Tinubu has given approval for the emergency procurement of digital tracking tools to address the escalating issues of kidnapping and insecurity. Wike made this announcement during a media briefing in Abuja.
He pointed out the current lack of facilities for tracking criminals within the FCTA, emphasizing that such tools are only available at the Police Headquarters and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Wike highlighted the absence of essential resources, including vehicles for security agencies and tracking equipment for criminals. He emphasized the need for proper infrastructure, stating that in case of incidents, security personnel often have to rely on the Office of the National Security Adviser or the Force Headquarters, which is not the ideal situation.
Wike acknowledged the prior request by the police for the procurement of motorcycles to access remote and mountainous areas where vehicles cannot reach. He noted that despite the previous lack of provision, the necessary steps would be taken to address this now.
He also stressed that while equipment is crucial for security, motivating personnel is equally important. Wike refrained from discussing specific security strategies during the briefing.
The announcement comes at a time of increased insecurity in the nation’s capital, prompting the Senate to summon Wike to address the surge in security concerns. Concurrently, security agencies’ efforts have led to the recent rescue of abducted residents in Abuja, as reported by DAILY POST.
