The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against endorsing the Labour Party (LP) National Convention slated for March 27, 2024. This caution was conveyed in a letter addressed to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
In the letter, dated March 22, 2024, issued by the NLC’s legal representatives, Falana and Falana’s Chambers, the NLC accused LP Chairman Julius Abure and associates of planning an unlawful convention in defiance of court orders.
The NLC emphasized that such a national convention would be illegal in light of existing court rulings that invalidated the LP’s status and mandated inclusive conventions.
Signed by Marshal Abubakar, the letter threatened legal action if INEC failed to comply with the demand. Titled “Request To Desist From Validating The Illegal Labour Party National Convention Scheduled For March 27, 2024,” the letter outlined the legal basis for the NLC’s position, citing specific court judgments and orders.
It urged INEC to refrain from participating in the convention and warned of potential contempt proceedings if the demand was not met promptly.
