Anambra: How non-appointment of Auditor-General keeps retirees’ fate in balance

The absence of a newly appointed state Auditor-General in Anambra State is affecting recently retired civil servants, as the position has remained vacant since Mr. Daniel Okeke’s retirement in July.

The Anambra State House of Assembly had confirmed Okeke’s appointment on November 4, 2022, but his subsequent retirement has left the position unfilled. Four months after Okeke’s retirement, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has not appointed a new Auditor-General, causing delays in processing the entitlements of retirees.

Retirees are unable to receive their pensions as their paperwork awaits the signature of the Auditor-General. Despite calls for the appointment of a new Auditor-General, no action has been taken by the governor, leaving the fate of many retirees uncertain. The former Auditor-General, Mr. Okeke, emphasized the crucial role of audit work in building public trust and confidence in government financial transactions before his retirement.
