Anti-Corruption Group Petitions EFCC, ICPC Over Defence Minister’s Alleged Misconduct

The Young Guardians of Accountability (YGA), an anti-corruption advocacy group, has formally petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to launch an investigation into Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, over allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest.

In a petition signed by its chairman, Adediran Raymond, YGA accused the minister of violating federal laws that prohibit public officials from engaging in private business activities while in office.

Allegations Against the Minister

The group claims that Badaru continues to hold directorship positions in multiple private companies, including Talamiz Nigeria Limited, Talamiz Petroleum Nig. Ltd, and Gulfstream Logistics Limited, despite his ministerial role.

“Shockingly, Mr. Abubakar continues to file annual returns for these companies, with recent records dating back to last year,” the petition states.

“Most concerning, he operates a licensed Bureau de Change (BDC) while serving as a federal minister—an outright violation of laws meant to prevent conflicts of interest and corruption,” the petition added.

Call for Investigation and Possible Prosecution

YGA has urged authorities to determine whether Badaru fully disclosed his business interests in his official asset declaration, arguing that his continued involvement in private enterprises shows a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

The group is demanding:
✅ An immediate investigation into the minister’s business dealings
✅ His suspension from office
Prosecution if found guilty

“The Ministry of Defence, a critical institution responsible for national security, cannot be entrusted to an individual who appears to be using state resources for personal enrichment,” YGA insisted.

As of the time of this report, neither Badaru nor his representatives had responded to the allegations. The EFCC and ICPC have also yet to issue any official statements regarding the petition.
