Appeal court upholds APC senator’s victory in Oyo

In a recent decision, the Lagos Court of Appeal has upheld the ruling of the National Assembly Petition Tribunal, confirming Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s victory in the Oyo South district. Senator Alli, who contested on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, had been declared the winner of the senatorial election held on February 25th by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, candidates Joseph Tegbe from the Peoples Democratic Party and Funmilayo Gbogbolomo from the New Nigeria Peoples Party had challenged Alli’s victory at the tribunal. The tribunal had previously affirmed Alli’s win and dismissed the petitions brought by the PDP and NNPP candidates.

Following the tribunal’s judgment, Tegbe and Gbogbolomo took their case to the Court of Appeal. Nevertheless, the Court of Appeal, in its recent decision, upheld the victory of Senator Alli from the APC. The appeals by Tegbe and Gbogbolomo were unanimously dismissed by the judges on the grounds that they lacked merit, thereby affirming the tribunal’s judgment.
