Ava building collapse: How site workers escaped death

Approximately eight construction workers narrowly escaped death on Friday when a two-story building under construction collapsed on Chukwunyere Street in Aba, Abia State.

The building, which was nearly complete, collapsed on Friday night, sparking fears that people might be trapped beneath the debris. However, local residents reported that the workers had already left the site for the day before the collapse occurred.

As of the time of this report, no official statement has been released regarding the cause of the collapse, and the contractor responsible for the project has not come forward to provide an explanation.

Many residents who gathered at the scene attributed the collapse to the use of substandard materials. They urged the Abia State Government to crack down on unqualified builders in the construction industry.

In response, officials from the Aba South Town Planning Authority have sealed off the site to conduct a thorough investigation.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in June 2024, when a three-story building under construction collapsed in Obingwu, Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, resulting in the deaths of five construction workers, as confirmed by the State Government.
