The killing of George Sibo, reportedly shot in the head at the Governorship Election Collation Centre in Brass Local Government Area Headquarters, has been strongly condemned by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC). In a statement released on Monday and signed by the Spokesperson, Bedford Berefa, the IYC characterized the incident as a regrettable, senseless, and unjustifiable assault on an unarmed youth by political thugs.
DAILY POST disclosed that Sibo, also known as “Kobo-Kobo,” served as an aide to the Brass Local Government Chairman, Hanson Alabo-Karika.
The statement issued by the IYC expressed deep concern about the recent upswing of violence in the Brass Local Government Area, attributing the incident to alleged supporters of a specific party candidate. The IYC emphasized the detrimental impact of political violence on the democratic process and the overall welfare of the state.
The statement reads, “It’s distressing to witness the loss of life due to political interests. Violence has no place in a democratic society. A lost life equals a lost generation, and a crucial part of the Ijaw future has been lost unnecessarily.”
The IYC called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, urging law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for the violence face the full consequences of the law. The Council emphasized the need for accountability to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and protect the lives of the people.
In concluding, the IYC appealed to political actors to prioritize peaceful engagement and refrain from actions that could incite violence.
