The beleaguered former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been discharged from Kuje prison. Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), confirmed this exclusively to DAILY POST on Saturday.
Abubakar stated that Emefiele was liberated on Friday from Kuje prison after meeting the requirements for his bail.
“Godwin Emefiele was released on Friday. The Service released him after he fulfilled his bail conditions,” he informed DAILY POST.
This development occurred a month after Justice Hamza Muazu, on November 22, 2023, granted Emefiele a N300 million bail, with a stipulation that his sureties must possess real estate in the Maitama District of Abuja.
Justice Muazu had ordered Emefiele’s confinement in prison until the bail conditions were met.
It is noteworthy that Emefiele faced charges in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Federal Government regarding an alleged N1.2 billion procurement fraud.
Meanwhile, the news of his release coincides with the disclosure of financial malfeasance attributed to Emefiele, as per the interim report of Jim Obazee, the special investigator scrutinizing the CBN.
