The West African Examinations Council has unveiled the outcomes of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates nationwide.
This information was disclosed in a statement released by Moyosola Adesina, the acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, on Tuesday evening.
Adesina revealed that only 46,267 out of the 80,904 candidates who took the exam achieved a minimum of five credits.
She clarified that this represents 57.19% of candidates who obtained credit and above in at least five subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics).
Additionally, she noted that 35,830 candidates, accounting for 44.29%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The statement outlined that the examination took place in Nigeria from Friday, October 27, 2023, to Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Coordination of Examiners and Marking of Candidates’ Scripts occurred at seven marking venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Benin, Enugu, Uyo, and Kaduna from Tuesday, January 16, to Tuesday, January 30, 2024. A total of 4,162 examiners participated in this exercise.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted an increase in entries, with 85,600 candidates registering for the examination, a 10.07% rise compared to the 2022 figure of 77,768. Of these, 80,904 candidates sat the exam at 568 centers across the country.
Among the candidates, 211 with special needs were registered for the exam, including 33 visually challenged, 21 with impaired hearing, and 30 albinos. Provision was made for these candidates to ensure they could take the examination properly.
Candidates were encouraged to check their results on www.waecdirect.org before accessing their digital certificates, which have been released alongside their results on the Digital Certificate platform (www.waec.org).
