On Friday, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu signed the 2024 budget, named the People First budget, into law. During the ceremony held in his office, the governor disclosed that the budget amounted to N296.985 billion, comprising N180 billion for capital expenditure and N116 billion for recurrent expenditure.
Governor Otu explained that the budget had experienced an increase of about N96 billion compared to the initial submission of N250 billion to the state House of Assembly. He clarified that this adjustment was driven by the imperative to provide substantial financial support for individuals with disabilities.
The governor emphasized that the augmented allocation for this community was not only a necessity but also a moral obligation aimed at rectifying social imbalances affecting this vulnerable group. He highlighted that the increased budget would enhance accessibility to healthcare, assistive technologies, education, and employment opportunities tailored to the capabilities of those with disabilities. Governor Otu underscored that this decision went beyond fiscal considerations, portraying a reflection of the society’s values.
Furthermore, he outlined specific areas where the increased budgetary allocation would be directed, including gratuity payments, debt services, counterpart funds, nutrition activities, social protection, climate change initiatives, and a budget responsive to gender considerations.
