President of the Association of Nigerian Students in Europe (ANSE), Bashiru Muhammad has called on Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to intervene in the plight of one Usman Yahaya, a Sokoto State-born final year medical student who has been in detention in Russia.
PRNigeria, had last week reported that Yahaya, a brilliant Nigerian medical student in Russia was suspended by ISMU University for non-payment of final year tuition fees.
He was thereafter detained at a Russian immigration camp at Angarsk Irkutsk, by authorities of the European nation’s Immigration due to corrupt practices at Sokoto Scholarship Board.
It was gathered that Yahaya’s travail was orchestrated by some corrupt officials at the Sokoto State Scholarship Board who have been ‘removing’ part of Yahaya’s foreign bursary, approved yearly by the Sokoto State Government, since 2016.
He has appeared twice at a Russian State court and if eventually convicted, Yahaya may be expelled from IMSU University, detained or even banned from entering Russia, in the nearest future.
However, Bashiru Muhammad, the ANSE President, in a statement, expressed worry that Governor Tambuwal’s unwavering support and kind gesture for Sokoto students abroad will be undermined by the corruption in the state Scholarship Board, if proactive steps are not taken to quickly rescue Yahaya.
According to him, it is necessary for the Sokoto government to investigate the corruption scandal at the state’s Scholarship Board, with a view to sanctioning the officials behind Yahaya’s ordeal in faraway Russia.
Bashir, while lauding the efforts of Governor Tambuwal in transforming the education sector in the ‘Seat of Caliphate’, reiterated their association’s support for his government.
