With just twelve days left in Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration in Edo State, state Accountant General Mr. Julius Anelu and four government officials have allegedly been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). According to information obtained by DAILY POST, the officials were arrested for being signatories to the state’s financial accounts.
They are reportedly being held at the EFCC’s Benin zonal office. The arrests took place on Thursday after the officials were called in for a meeting. It is believed that the EFCC intends to keep them detained until November 12, the date marking the end of the outgoing governor’s term.
This action has allegedly disrupted government operations, resulting in unpaid salaries and pensions for civil servants and affecting other statutory payments. When asked for confirmation, EFCC spokesperson Williams Oseghale directed inquiries to the Commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, who has not yet replied to a text message from journalists.
