EFCC files fresh 26 charges against ex-CBN gov Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought forth a fresh 26-count indictment against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, centered on allegations of abuse of office and corruption.

Emefiele is scheduled to appear before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Monday, April 8. The charges against him encompass various offenses including accepting gratification, receiving gifts through intermediaries, engaging in corrupt practices, knowingly receiving unlawfully acquired property, and providing corrupt advantages to his associates, all in violation of the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000.

According to a report by Channels Television, these new charges were lodged on April 3 by the EFCC Prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

One of the counts in the charge states: “That between 2022 and 2023, in Lagos, you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, abused the authority vested in your office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by arbitrarily allocating foreign exchange in the total sum of $2,136,391,737.33 (two billion, one hundred and thirty-six million, three hundred and ninety-one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-seven dollars, and thirty-three cents) without following due process, which action is detrimental to the interests of Nigerians.”
