Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has placed the blame on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya for his consistent mistakes following Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.
Raya has been prone to a series of significant errors since taking over as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, replacing Aaron Ramsdale. He was partially responsible for Newcastle’s winning goal.
Carragher, as quoted by the Mirror, remarked, “Let’s not dwell on all the VAR-related issues because this is now a serious concern for Mikel Arteta. Raya is once again the one at fault.”
He continued, “Once more, he has repeated the same mistake, similar to the one he made a few weeks ago in another significant match against Chelsea. At that time, he escaped without consequences, but not tonight.”
Carragher also pointed out, “If you observe the goalkeeper’s initial position, his positioning is outside his near post, which is acceptable as he instructs his players to get out. However, he keeps creeping forward, and when the ball is played in, he is farther off his line than necessary. This is a recurring issue with this goalkeeper.”
Raya joined Mikel Arteta’s team during the summer on a season-long loan from Brentford.
