Ali Ciroma, a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has passed away.
Ciroma breathed his last at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Tuesday.
The veteran unionist’s death was announced by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who also serves as the Secretary of the Borno State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, in a statement on Tuesday.
“It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the passing of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The unfortunate incident occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
“The burial ceremony for the departed will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, at 4pm at the deceased’s residence, No.7A along Galadima Road near Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home), Maiduguri,” the statement read.
Ciroma served as NLC president from 1984 to 1988 during the military regime of Ibrahim Babagida.
It is worth noting that Ciroma, alongside other veteran unionists, had previously called for the resignation of the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, amid the crisis plaguing the opposition party.
