Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ becomes first Nollywood film to hit N1bn

Funke Akindele’s latest film, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Nollywood movie to surpass N1 billion in box office revenue. The film reached this remarkable feat within three weeks of its release.

The CEO of FilmHouse Group, Kene Okwuosa, announced this historic accomplishment in a statement on Thursday, highlighting that the success of ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ signifies a golden era for Nigerian cinema. The statement also emphasized that the film has not only captivated audiences but has demonstrated the resilience of Nigerian cinema in the face of global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video.

Upon its release on December 15, 2023, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ became the first Nollywood movie to gross over N113 million in its opening weekend. This achievement underscores the film’s widespread popularity and success at the box office.

It is noteworthy that Funke Akindele’s previous film, ‘Battle on Buka Street,’ grossed N650 million at the box office in 2022. However, the recent success of ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ has surpassed this previous record, marking a significant milestone in Nollywood’s box office history.
