Herdsmen Attack: We have been abandoned by govt – Benue community alleges

Suspected armed herdsmen once again launched a deadly attack on Gbagir community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, targeting Christian worshippers heading to church on Good Friday.

The assault reportedly claimed at least ten lives, with many others sustaining injuries.

A local source disclosed that the attackers, said to be wielding AK-47 rifles, stormed the community early Friday morning, around 6:00 a.m., just as residents were preparing for church services.

The source, confirming the incident, revealed that the corpses of the victims were being taken to the palace of the community’s traditional ruler, expressing frustration over the lack of government support.

He stated, “The herdsmen had first attacked Chito community nearby on Thursday, killing two people. Then, they invaded our village today (Friday), killing 10 people, including women and children.”

He added that around 25 others were injured, many critically, with uncertainty over how many would survive.

Decrying the frequent attacks by herdsmen, the source lamented the absence of any government security intervention during or after the assaults.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Command for an official response were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Catherine Anene, could not be reached.
