The Defence Headquarters has verified that the troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade successfully thwarted an attack on the convoy of Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, by terrorists along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road on Saturday.
In a statement released by Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, on Monday in Abuja, it was confirmed that the troops also recovered two vehicles that were affected in the incident. The statement further disclosed that one military truck driver, four police escorts, and one DSS operative, who were wounded in the attack, were currently in stable condition.
The Director reported that one of the injured police escorts unfortunately succumbed to injuries shortly after arriving at the Specialists Hospital Damaturu. Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba stated that reinforcements from the 29 Task Force Brigade, led by the Brigade Commander, were conducting a fighting patrol in the area to locate the terrorists responsible for the attack.
He provided details about the two vehicles involved in the incident, specifying that one military MRAP and one civilian escort vehicle, whose tires were shot at during the attack, have been safely recovered to the military camp at Benisheikh. Ongoing operations aim to track down and eliminate the terrorists responsible for the attack.
Recalling the event, the governor’s convoy was ambushed by terrorists while returning to Damaturu from Maiduguri, approximately 6 kilometers from Benesheikh town on Saturday. It’s important to note that Governor Mai Mala Buni was not in the convoy during the ambush, and the Secretary to the State Government and other top government officials in the convoy were unharmed.
