I weep for Rivers, Ibas’ activities have set state on keg of gunpowder – Secondus

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has expressed deep concern over the situation in Rivers State, saying he is heartbroken by recent developments.

In an Easter message released by his Special Adviser on Media, Ike Abonyi, Secondus criticized the actions of Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, warning that they have put the state in a volatile and dangerous position.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to reject poor counsel and reinstate Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who he said holds the legitimate mandate of the people.

“The President must listen to reason and restore Governor Fubara to his rightful position,” Secondus urged. “The current actions of the Sole Administrator have turned Rivers State into a ticking time bomb. I am deeply saddened to see my beloved state in this troubling situation, driven by the pursuit of control and resources by a single individual.”

Secondus also commended the Ijaw people for their patience amid ongoing political tensions, recognizing their resilience despite repeated provocations.

“I express my gratitude to the Ijaw nation, its leaders and citizens—Nigeria’s fourth largest ethnic group with presence across seven states—for showing remarkable restraint in these trying times,” he said.

He concluded by calling on Christians to reflect on the values of Christ during Easter, promoting love, peace, fairness, and justice.

“Easter reminds us of the importance of compassion, peaceful coexistence, tolerance, humility, and equity for all, as taught in the Scriptures,” Secondus stated.

This comes shortly after the Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State oversight summoned Ibas for discussions on the governance of the state.

It follows President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers due to an ongoing political crisis, during which he suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state assembly. Tinubu subsequently appointed Ibas as the state’s administrator.
