Former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, is expected to collaborate with various factions to restore peace in Rivers State.
Legal practitioner and human rights activist, Obol Utum Eteng, made this assertion while reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the commencement of Ibas’s role as administrator.
Eteng explained that the purpose of the emergency rule is to maintain peace and protect critical national infrastructure within the state.
“Ibok-Ete’s appointment is timely, given his extensive administrative experience in the military. His leadership skills will help bring stability and much-needed peace to Rivers State,” he said.
He further noted that the six-month period would allow those instigating the crisis to reconsider their actions and work towards reconciliation.
Additionally, he emphasized that Ibas’s appointment could strengthen ties between Rivers State and his home state, Cross River.
Eteng highlighted that the former naval chief was chosen for this critical role due to his ability to manage conflicts effectively.
He urged all stakeholders in the crisis to put aside their differences, stressing that violence only leads to setbacks and losses.
“Rivers State holds significant importance to Nigeria, which is why President Tinubu acted swiftly. The people must take this as a lesson and ensure the crisis does not extend beyond six months to avoid a possible extension of emergency rule.
“They should support the administrator and work towards lasting peace,” he added.
