Impeachment: Fasoranti, Ondo elders move to settle Akeredolu, deputy

In the aftermath of the recent political turmoil in Ondo State, arising from the discord between Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, efforts have been initiated by the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and a group of elders in the state to address the situation. These leaders, comprising traditional rulers, religious leaders, and elder statesmen, convened a meeting at Fasoranti’s residence in Akure, the state capital. In this gathering, they made a plea for an immediate halt to the ongoing impeachment proceedings by the State House of Assembly. The leaders clarified that their request to suspend the impeachment proceedings was intended to facilitate discussions with the key figures involved, with the objective of re-establishing peace and fostering progress in the state.Speaking to the media on behalf of the group, Fasoranti, the former Secretary-General of Afenifere, explained that the meeting was convened to explore solutions to the crisis.”The elders’ meeting was summoned by the Afenifere leader and, by implication, the Yoruba leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, to discuss issues in our state. It is still ongoing; we just started the discussion about the problems happening in the state. Having looked at so many things, it was the conclusion of the elders and leaders of Ondo State that, for now, there should be no impeachment of either the governor or the deputy.”Similarly, the Lisa of Ondo Kingdom, Sir Simeon Oguntimehin, emphasized after the meeting that there should be no attempts to impeach either the Governor or the Deputy Governor. He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law in the state and expressed a collective desire for peace and adherence to the constitutional framework.

“This is a Sunshine State, and the state must continue to shine,” added Sir Simeon Oguntimehin.
