INEC office in Ebonyi set ablaze

Some yet to be identified persons have set ablaze the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC office in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Sunday.

A statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, says the Commission received a report about the incident from the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ebonyi State, Mrs Onyeka Ugochi.

According to the statement, the main building and all the movable and immovable items inside it were burnt.

‘’These include 340 ballot boxes, 130 voting cubicles, 14 electric power generators, large water storage tanks, assorted office furniture and fixtures and yet to be determined quantities of Permanent Voters’ Cards’’,  it reads.

The Commission says the incident has been reported to the Police and other security agencies.

The statement notes with regret that this is the third attack on Local Government INEC offices within the space of three weeks, following similar attacks in Ogun and Osun States.
