Juan Izquierdo dies at 27 after collapsing during Copa Libertadores match

Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo has died at the age of 27.

Izquierdo passed away just days after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil.

The tragic news was confirmed by both his Uruguayan club and South America’s football governing body.

Nacional shared on social media that Izquierdo’s death has caused “deep pain and impact in our hearts,” and that “all of Nacional is grieving his irreplaceable loss.”

The player had fallen on the field and was taken to Hospital Albert Einstein, where the team initially reported that he was in a “stable condition.”

Later, the hospital announced that Izquierdo had suffered “cardiorespiratory arrest linked to his cardiac arrhythmia.”

Izquierdo was married and had two children.
