President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reiterated his dedication to advancing judicial reforms within the region. He emphasized the importance of an accountable and integrity-driven judicial system in strengthening democracy across West Africa, highlighting the judiciary as the primary safeguard for ordinary citizens. Tinubu delivered these remarks during a meeting with the ECOWAS Judicial Council, headed by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Council Chairman, held at the State House in Abuja.
“We are committed to fostering transformative democracy as we believe in the judiciary’s capacity to safeguard democracy,” Tinubu stated. He expressed readiness to provide support to the council, acknowledging their expertise and institutional knowledge necessary for comprehensive institutional reforms.
In his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu assured the judges from member-states, who participated in the two-day council meeting in Abuja, that their recommendations would be given utmost consideration. He pledged to collaborate with them to ensure that their expertise is effectively utilized to promote justice in democratic experiences both on the continent and in the region.
Tinubu commended the judges for their participation and successful deliberations, emphasizing their crucial role as the last hope for the common people across the sub-region.
