Kano court jails popular TikToker Amuscap for Naira abuse

A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced social media influencer Abdullahi Musa Huseini, popularly known as Amuscap, to six months in prison for violating currency regulations by spraying and defacing the Naira during his wedding ceremony.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the ruling after Huseini pleaded guilty to a single charge of Naira abuse, a violation of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.

The charge was based on a December 6, 2024, incident at the Ali Jita Event Centre in Kano, where Huseini was caught on video lavishly spraying N100,000 in N1000 notes while dancing at his wedding.

The charge stated: “That you, Abdullahi Musa Huseini, on December 6, 2024, at Ali Jita Event Centre, Kano, within the jurisdiction of this court, tampered with N100,000 in N1000 denominations issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying it during a social event.”

Upon his guilty plea, prosecuting counsel Zarami Mohammed presented supporting evidence to the court, prompting a swift conviction.

Justice Shuaibu sentenced Huseini to six months in jail without the option of a fine, emphasizing that his actions were a serious violation of the law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which brought the case forward, stated that Huseini was arrested after receiving credible intelligence regarding the Naira abuse. Investigations confirmed that the act was intentional and carried out in defiance of legal warnings and public sensitization efforts.

The EFCC reiterated its warning to the public, stressing that defacing or mishandling the Naira, especially at celebrations, constitutes economic sabotage and is punishable by law.
