Reactions are emerging in response to the recent alarm raised by the Yoruba community in Kano State. Yoruba residents in certain areas of Kano expressed concerns of potential attacks following the Appeal Court’s decision to nullify the election of Governor Abba Yusuf. The court ruled that Governor Yusuf was not a valid candidate during the gubernatorial polls, citing evidence that he was not a member of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) at the time of the election. Consequently, the court declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.
The Appeal Court’s decision sparked nationwide anger, with some accusing the ruling APC of influencing the court’s judgment. In Kano, there were reports of threats against Yoruba residents, alleging their involvement in the removal of Governor Yusuf. The Concerned Yoruba Community in Kano, led by Taofeek Olalekan Olaosebikan, held a press conference, urging Yoruba leaders and citizens to intervene in the situation, claiming that their lives were in danger.
A Yoruba trader in Kano, Mr. Matthew Adebayo, revealed alleged threats from indigenous residents, stating that some people were blaming Yoruba individuals for the change in leadership. He described instances where Yoruba traders were avoided by NNPP supporters and expressed concern about the unjust targeting of innocent individuals.
Seyi Oluronsola, Chairman of Yoruba Cultural Group, dismissed the allegations, suggesting that they were attempts by the NNPP and its supporters to tarnish the president’s image. He argued that the Yoruba community in Kano included members of various political parties and accused the NNPP of engaging in political propaganda.
In response to the situation, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, a pan Yoruba socio-political and cultural organization, acknowledged the right of people to seek help when they perceive danger. However, he cautioned against encouraging executive interference with the judicial process and emphasized the importance of security agencies ensuring the protection of all residents, regardless of their background.
Ajayi called for a focus on pursuing legal avenues, such as the NNPP’s filed appeal, and urged politicians to consider the potential consequences of actions that may provoke reprisals in other parts of the country. He emphasized the need for peace, adherence to the law, and protection of the lives and properties of all Nigerians.
