The Director of New Media for the now-defunct Peoples Democratic Party Governorship Campaign Council in Abia State, Chief Uche Aguoru, has attributed the Party’s defeat in the 2023 elections to the high-handedness and lack of sincerity among a few influential members.
He particularly criticized former Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe, accusing him of laying the groundwork for the party’s downfall. Aguoru asserted that Abaribe led a rebellion and emboldened others to turn against the party.
Aguoru highlighted that the party leadership failed to perceive the conspiracy and proceeded to deny tickets to popular candidates during the primary elections. This resulted in the loss of valuable members who could have secured victory at the grassroots level.
He lamented that internal conflicts within the party, exacerbated by the lack of control over internal mechanisms by the state chairman, led to inevitable losses at the polling units.
Aguoru disclosed that the party has initiated internal conflict resolution efforts, which are showing promising outcomes. He emphasized ongoing high-level meetings and the comprehensive addressing of issues without reservation.
He expressed confidence that the party would soon emerge with a robust and dynamic leadership following a process of self-evaluation and strategic planning. Aguoru stressed the importance of the PDP as the primary platform capable of providing formidable opposition to the ruling Labour party.
Furthermore, Aguoru called on Senator Akobundu to permit members to democratically elect their leaders, urging him to uphold internal party democracy. He criticized Akobundu’s alleged undemocratic tendencies, which, according to Aguoru, prompted the departure of notable figures like Hon Onuigbo from the PDP.
