Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed that Nigeria stands to gain significantly from the support of the UK as it deals with challenges including insecurity, education, healthcare, and poverty.
Obi’s remarks followed the official declaration of the Labour Party as the winner of the UK’s general election, having secured the necessary 326 parliamentary seats. The former Governor of Anambra State proposed that both nations collaborate to forge a more promising future for the Commonwealth.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Friday, Obi anticipated strengthened relations between the UK and Nigeria, emphasizing the potential for these ties to bolster democracy in Nigeria during these trying times.
DAILY POST reported that the Labour Party’s victory ended the Conservative Party’s more than 14-year tenure in government.
Obi, extending congratulations to Keir Starmer and the UK Labour Party for their resounding victory, expressed optimism that the outcome would usher in a new and improved chapter for all residents of the UK, underlining his hope for enhanced bilateral cooperation between the UK and Nigeria.
He stated, “I sincerely congratulate @Keir_Starmer and the Labour Party UK on the landslide victory they achieved in Thursday’s election. May this victory lead to a better and new era for all UK residents as you fulfill your electoral promises.
“I also hope that your administration will foster stronger relations between the UK and Nigeria and contribute to the deepening of our democracy, particularly amidst the challenges facing our nation.
“Nigeria is contending with issues such as insecurity, education, healthcare, and poverty, and could benefit greatly from the support of the UK. Let’s collaborate to build a brighter future for the Commonwealth. I wish you a successful tenure.”
