LP threatens to declare Enugu lawmakers’ seats vacant

The Labour Party (LP) has issued a warning that it may declare vacant the seats of Enugu State lawmakers intending to defect to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Casmir Agbo, the Enugu State LP Chairman, conveyed this threat via a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday. It’s noted that the State government is currently controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which emerged victorious in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

There are ongoing political maneuvers, as reported by DAILY POST, with some members of the house considering a switch to the ruling PDP. Agbo has publicly acknowledged awareness of these moves by certain LP members of the House of Assembly (HOA) who are seeking to join the PDP. He emphasized, “Their seats will be declared vacant.”

DAILY POST also highlights that despite securing fewer seats in the house, the PDP holds leadership positions in the State legislature. Following the 2023 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released a list indicating that the PDP won 14 out of 24 seats. Rex Achumie, INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Enugu State, disclosed this list, detailing the names, constituencies, parties, and the number of votes garnered by the members-elect during the March 18 election. The remaining 10 seats were won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
