N15 billion allocated for Third Mainland Bridge repairs in Lagos.

According to information from the recently approved 2023 supplementary budget, the Federal Government has designated N15 billion for the extensive restoration of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. Additionally, it has acknowledged a debt of N11.4 billion to the contractors responsible for the Eko/Marine Bridges.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, has declared that the repairs on the Third Mainland Bridge will commence on Monday, November 6, 2023, and will last for five weeks. During this period, the bridge will be closed for maintenance. The repair work will begin with the ramps connecting Oworoshoki to Adekunle and Lagos-Island (Adeniji Adele) to Adekunle simultaneously. These two mentioned ramps will be inaccessible to traffic from 7 am on Monday, November 6, 2023.

Meanwhile, in the course of defending the Ministry of Works’ supplementary budget, Minister Senator Dave Umahi expressed his concern about the persistent deterioration of bridges nationwide. He highlighted the challenges faced in road infrastructure, noting that the ministry inherited 18,897 kilometers of roads totaling N14 trillion. However, by the time he assumed office, approximately N3.1 trillion had been disbursed, leaving a remaining certificate balance of N1.6 trillion.
