Nigerian govt to establish blood collection centres in 774 LGAs

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to set up Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to ensure blood availability during medical emergencies and transfusions.

Abdullahi Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity at the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), shared this information in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Prof. Saleh Yuguda, the NBSA Director-General, emphasized the government’s dedication to resolving blood shortages, stating that this initiative is crucial for saving lives.

“We are working diligently to meet blood demands, and this initiative represents a significant advancement toward that objective.

“NBSA has teamed up with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to create a robust blood bank at the Corp’s medical facility.

“This partnership aims to alleviate blood shortages during medical emergencies and provide essential support to other security agencies,” he explained.

He added that the initial phase of the blood collection project will feature strategic facilities in easily accessible locations within the FCT.

“This approach is anticipated to boost blood donation rates and ensure a reliable supply for medical needs.

“The establishment of these blood collection centres across Nigeria underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.

“With the rollout of this project, Nigerians can expect improved access to blood transfusions and better health outcomes,” he concluded.
