Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has stressed the need for component units in a Federation to enjoy considerable freedom in order to explore avenues for sustenance.
According to Akeredolu who described the current structure as deplorable, said it renders the states of the Federation virtually ineffective.
The governor said this on Monday during an event organised to honour living heroes who were involved in the struggle for the creation of the state.
Akeredolu maintained that the current political setup must be extensively tinkered with if true improvement is to be made.
“The present system as practised is a skewed one that erodes the Identities of the states.”
“We must not opt for the opportunistic path of political correctness which predisposes us to ambivalence when principled stance on issues of national development is discussed.”
He also stated that local government autonomy is a political farce that needs to be exposed for what it is, adding that autonomy is a misleading ruse intended to deceive and depose.
Akeredolu called on the federal government to relinquish local responsibilities, arguing that as a federation, states should be entitled to choose how many local governments they want.
Among the living Heroes honoured are Pa Reuben Fasoranti; Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa (OFR); Baba Animasaun; Chief Olu Adeyemi; R.A Olusa; and J.A. Olukoju.
