Under significant pressure, the Department of State Services (DSS) Director General, Adeola Ajayi, has removed the restriction preventing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from meeting his legal team.
Lead counsel Aloy Ejimakor, along with Kanu’s legal team, visited him at the DSS headquarters in Abuja. Ejimakor noted that intervention by Representative Obi Aguocha, who serves Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and South Federal constituency, was key in lifting the restriction.
In a statement on X, Ejimakor wrote: “Today, under the DG DSS’s directive, the #MnkLegalTeam completed its first successful visit with MAZI NNAMDI KANU since September 27. Mazi Ndidi Awurum, visiting from the US, joined us. Our rigorous legal efforts and Hon Obi Aguocha’s advocacy were essential to this outcome.”
The DSS had previously blocked Kanu from seeing his legal team after he disrupted a Federal High Court session in Abuja, where he called for Justice Binta Nyako’s withdrawal from his case. Nevertheless, the court ordered the DSS to end the restriction, warning the DSS Director General of potential jail time for non-compliance.
During the dispute, Aguocha visited Kanu at the DSS facility on October 24, 2024. Afterward, he announced that the restrictions on Kanu had been lifted.
