The accidental bombing of Tundun Biri in Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army on Sunday has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of individuals in conflict zones, according to the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). The forum is urging a thorough investigation into the tragic incident that resulted in the loss of lives.
Mallam Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, NEF’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy, emphasized in a statement on Tuesday that while the Kaduna State Government has committed to compensating the victims of the airstrike, it is crucial to go beyond compensation. The elders are calling for a comprehensive inquiry to ensure justice for the affected civilians, prevent similar incidents in the future, and uphold the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Suleiman stressed that a thorough investigation is necessary to identify any systemic flaws, deficiencies in training, or poor practices that may have contributed to the accidental bombing. By analyzing the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the inquiry could lead to important reforms within the military, including increased coordination, enhanced intelligence gathering, and stricter adherence to rules of engagement.
The NEF believes that these measures are essential for minimizing the risk of accidental bombings and protecting civilian lives during military operations. The call for an investigation aligns with the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.
