Ogun INEC REC slumps, dies in Abuja

Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has passed away.

Ijalaye collapsed and died on Monday evening after attending a meeting of RECs at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja. According to an anonymous source from Ogun INEC, the Ondo-born REC had returned to his hotel room after the meeting when the incident occurred.

Sources indicate that Ijalaye, dressed in a blue-striped kaftan and a red cap, was actively involved in the discussions during the meeting. The meeting, led by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, focused on upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

Ijalaye had been serving as Ogun State’s REC since March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.

The commission has not yet issued an official confirmation of his death.
