Only 4,500 out of 35.1m PWDs in Nigeria officially registered – Commission

The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) has revealed that out of the 35.1 million individuals currently living with disabilities in Nigeria, only 4,500 are officially registered. This disclosure was made by James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, during a one-day program in Kano focused on issuing permanent certificates to persons with disabilities in the North-West.

Speaking at the event, represented by Ikem Uchegbulam, the Director of Compliance and Enforcement of the Commission, Lalu stated that the program aimed to create awareness among persons with disabilities (PWDs) about the advantages of obtaining certification. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with Section 28 of the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Act.

Lalu clarified that PWDs can acquire a permanent certificate from the Commission, while medical doctors issue temporary certifications for those unable to use a specific body part. Stressing the significance of the certificate, he noted that, apart from serving as a form of identification, it is a legal requirement for seeking remedies in the court of law.

He encouraged all Nigerians living with disabilities to obtain these certificates to fully access their benefits, stating that only PWDs with valid certificates are entitled to receive and seek treatments as outlined in the Disability Act. Lalu also urged the public to seek appropriate advice from the Commission regarding the construction of accessible structures.
