Peseiro not the right man to lead Super Eagles – Gara-Gombe

Ahmed Gara-Gombe, the former chairman of Gombe United Football Association, has expressed the opinion that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made a significant error in appointing Jose Peseiro as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Peseiro has faced widespread criticism for the team’s poor performance and results since taking charge, notably during the disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

To secure his position, the Portuguese coach has been given the mandate to win the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, Gara-Gombe believes that Peseiro, who previously managed Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, is not adequately qualified to lead the Super Eagles.

According to Gara-Gombe, the decision to hire Peseiro was one of the biggest mistakes in the history of Nigerian football. He highlighted the lack of a distinct pattern or style of play for the team under Peseiro’s management, resulting in struggles to secure victories. Gara-Gombe criticized the team’s current approach, referring to it as a “cut and paste strategy” and a “wobble and fumble strategy.”
