Plateau killings: Police parade 17 suspects, repel fresh attack in Mangu

On Thursday, the police presented seventeen individuals believed to be connected to the recent killings in various parts of Plateau State. The Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 4, Ebong Eyibio, conducted the parade at the Plateau State Police Command headquarters in Jos.

According to Eyibio, eight of the suspects were apprehended in relation to the attacks on Christmas Eve in 2023, while the remaining nine were taken into custody for their alleged roles in a recent security breach in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. Eyibio, represented by the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, revealed that ten bodies were recovered following the recent incident in Mangu.

He announced during a press briefing, “The Plateau State Police Command has successfully thwarted an attack on villages in Mangu LGA. On 24/01/24 at about 22:00 hours, we received intelligence concerning an attack targeted at the Ntam community and the ASTC Company, both in Mangu LGA.”

He added that the police, in collaboration with the IGP Special Intervention Squad stationed at the ASTC, the Area Commander Pankshin, and the DPO, promptly responded and prevented the attempted attack. Eyibio also mentioned a separate incident in Panyam District, where the police intervened to prevent criminal arsonists from setting fire to worship centers.

To reinforce security in Mangu LGA and ensure compliance with the government-imposed curfew, Eyibio ordered the deployment of additional Special Intervention personnel. He expressed gratitude that the situation was under control, with nine suspects arrested so far. Recovered exhibits included dangerous weapons like machetes and containers holding petrol.

Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities, Eyibio assured continued efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Plateau State. He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. Eyibio had been assigned to Plateau State following the Christmas Eve attacks.
