Poverty, unemployment behind banditry in North-West – Gov Sani

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has attributed the security challenges in the North-West region to poverty and unemployment. During a visit by members of the Kaduna State Elders Forum to congratulate him on his Supreme Court victory, the governor emphasized that addressing these issues requires a focus on good governance. While acknowledging the ongoing military efforts against banditry and kidnapping, he highlighted the importance of non-kinetic solutions, particularly through effective governance.

Expressing concern about the high number of out-of-school children, Governor Sani emphasized the need to tackle this issue for the overall security of the state and the region. He mentioned the assurance of support from the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army, and the Chief of Air Staff, who have committed to establishing two Forward Operation Bases (FOB) in Kaduna – one in Southern Kaduna (Zangon Kataf) and the other in Birnin Gwari, covering the area from Birnin Gwari to Giwa. This intervention by the Defence Headquarters is anticipated to be implemented within the next three weeks.

Governor Sani also disclosed his intention to sign the bill for the establishment of the Security Trust Fund for the year 2024, underscoring the importance of comprehensive measures to address the security challenges facing the state.
