SERAP has called upon Nigeria’s 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to disclose the source documents detailing the expenditure of trillions of allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) dating back to 1999.
Additionally, SERAP has urged the governors to cooperate with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to oversee the spending of these allocations and investigate any corruption allegations associated with them.
This request comes in light of reports indicating that in March 2024 alone, the FAAC disbursed N1.123 trillion to various levels of government in Nigeria. SERAP has set a deadline of seven days for the provision of these documents and has warned that failure to comply will result in legal action to enforce compliance.
In their Freedom of Information (FoI) requests dated April 20, 2024, and signed by SERAP’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization emphasized the importance of transparency in public spending, stating that Nigerians have the right to know how public funds, including FAAC allocations, are utilized.
