Ramadan: Fasting can cause kidney problems, affect blood sugar level – Expert warns

Bolaji Salako, a Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, emphasized the importance of practicing healthy fasting habits for Muslim faithful during Ramadan. He cautioned that fasting during this period can carry certain health risks, particularly concerning kidney problems.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, Salako highlighted the risk of dehydration, especially in hot climates, due to prolonged fasting. He warned that inadequate hydration could lead to various complications such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and even more severe issues like kidney challenges if not addressed promptly.

Salako emphasized the need for fasting individuals to maintain proper hydration during non-fasting hours to mitigate these risks. He also noted the potential for nutritional deficiencies resulting from abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours, stressing the importance of consuming balanced diets during non-fasting periods.

Furthermore, Salako pointed out the impact of fasting on blood sugar levels, particularly for individuals with conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. He advised those with such conditions to collaborate closely with their medical practitioners to adjust medication schedules and monitor their health diligently throughout Ramadan to manage any potential complications effectively.
