Reform bill: Tinubu rejects NEC advice, insists on legislative process

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that the Proposed Tax Reforms Bill, currently before the National Assembly, will advance through the legislative process. This was announced on Friday via a statement from his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

The National Economic Council (NEC) had previously recommended that the executive withdraw the bill, facing significant opposition from certain northern stakeholders who believe it harms their interests. In light of this, Onanuga invited those with concerns about the bill to participate in public hearings and provide their input.

“President Tinubu is grateful to the members of the NEC, particularly Vice President Kashim Shettima and the 36 State Governors, for their guidance. He feels the ongoing legislative process allows for contributions and adjustments without the need to withdraw the bill. While urging the NEC to let the process continue, President Tinubu is open to further consultations with key stakeholders to resolve any issues as the National Assembly considers the bill for approval,” the statement added.
