Tinubu to participate in COP 28 climate summit in Dubai, departs Nigeria Wednesday

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart from Abuja on Wednesday to attend the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The summit, officially known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28), will host the World Leaders’ Summit on December 1 and 2, 2023, under the theme “Unite, Act, and Deliver.”

During the summit, President Tinubu will deliver a national statement, outlining Nigeria’s position on various thematic issues, with a focus on renewable energy and climate financing. Recognizing the severe impact of climate change on Nigeria, including desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and associated national security risks, Tinubu will use the platform to advocate for increased financial and technical support for developing nations.

President Tinubu will also emphasize developed countries’ commitment to providing $100 billion annually to support localized initiatives addressing climate change challenges. His message will stress accountability for businesses and institutions, aligning with Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices.

The Nigerian delegation accompanying President Tinubu to COP28 will actively explore the establishment of new and deeper bilateral partnerships. These partnerships will support the implementation of Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.

During his stay in Dubai, President Tinubu will actively participate in key side events that align with his commitment to attract foreign direct investment, aiming to enhance wealth creation and revenue expansion in Nigeria. The President, accompanied by senior government officials, is expected to return to Abuja at the conclusion of the summit, according to a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity.
