Eight individuals who were on their way home in a Sienna car to celebrate the New Year tragically lost their lives in a car accident at the Amanwozuzu junction in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, causing profound grief in the community as the victims were identified as members of a single family.
Eyewitnesses reported that the head of the family, who was driving the Sienna car with his wife and children, collided with a stationary truck loaded with rods. The impact was devastating, with the rods piercing the bodies of the victims, leading to the immediate loss of all eight lives, as recounted by one witness.
The onlooker described the scene as horrifying, stating that both the police and local residents were moved to tears as they worked together to extract the lifeless bodies from the wreckage of the Sienna vehicle. As of the time of reporting, the bodies had been taken to a morgue by officers from the Ikeduru Local Government Area Police Division.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge, Chief Superintendent of Police Lucky Ahiole, informed the media that the stationary truck was parked at the roadside when the Sienna driver collided with it. He described the incident as horrifying, emphasizing that the rods had penetrated the victims’ eyes and bodies, leading to the tragic outcome.
In response to the incident, some passersby urged the police to investigate the owner or driver of the stationary truck carrying rods to determine why it was blocking the road.
